Subject:whoa an update!
Time:8:47 pm.
Mood: hopeful.
I almost never login to lj anymore (I'm unsure what even prompted me to tonight haha). But wow, it's been a pretty fantastic 5 months or so since I last posted. It's kinda funny how my life pretty much did a complete 180 in one year's time. This time last year, I'd just been laid off yet again, this time by Oracle, and was struggling financially and was just a complete wreck in general. I eventually got that brief contract position with GrubHub but the pay was garbage and my parents were still subsidizing most of my living in Chicago (which is completely embarrassing to me, being 26 years old at the time).

I've now been with Cars.com / Classified Ventures almost 8 months. I won't say I LOVE my job, because it's stressful to the max at times, but I enjoy it for the most part. I love my co-workers and being downtown every day. Oh and that big, shiny raise and end of year bonus sure helped!

So that shiny bonus + my awesome tax return just bought me the brand spankin new Macbook Pro that I'm currently typing this on. FINALLY after spending almost 2.5 years without a working computer to my name, I was able to purchase myself a quality machine that I've been drooling over for years. I love it!

For the sake of time and length, I'll just make a quick list of happenings for the rest of my update.

-Got to meet Tommy Wiseau back in February during a screening of The Room at Music Box Theatre!

-Got to meet the lovely Eva Marie Saint at a screening of Hitchcock's North By Northwest at Music Box in January! (noticing a trend here? Music Box ROCKS!)

-Had my 27th birthday a couple weeks ago on April 10th. Should I be starting to feel old yet? haha.

-Had a fabulous time at home in Indy and then down to Louisville last weekend for Thunder Over Louisville. One of my dad's vendors from work pays to bring him and my mom down every year and this year they paid for my brother and I (and one of his friends) as well. Talk about wining and dining! Taken out for a fantastic dinner & drinks on Friday night. Followed by an all day food and drink-a-thon on Saturday for the airshow and fireworks. And omg those fireworks were the best I've ever seen in my life! And did I mention we were on the 15th floor penthouse suite of a hotel on the river? And had our own concierge! Omg. One of the best days ever!

-Registered to run the Chicago Marathon in October which I'm currently training for! Starting tomorrow with my very first 5k for charity, The Race to Wrigley. Woohoo. It's gonna be very hard work but I know I can do it. Right now, I'm at about 6-7 miles.

-Totally excited to see Conan O'Brien at the Chicago Theatre next month! Followed by my very first IKEA excursion in the suburbs then a very fun-filled weekend visit by my mom. Amongst our plans: Chicago chocolate tour and a Chicago ghost tour. I love getting to do touristy silly things when I'm showing people around. :)

-Also have two totally amazing upcoming trips planned. Vegas and Los Angeles, July 3rd to the 10th. Then Paris, London, Mont St. Michel, and a few yet to be determined European locales with my mom in May 2011!

Between now and then, I'll just be loving life and living it the best I can. I'm planning to move out of this apartment when the lease is up at the end of August. Definitely gonna be looking at one bedroom places in Edgewater (another neighborhood of Chicago, just a bit north of where I currently live in Old Town). I decided no more roommates unless it's a very attached boyfriend or husband. :)

Ok, this is gone on long enough. But hey, I only update once every 5 or 6 months.. so I think you'll live!

Subject:past few months
Time:6:00 pm.
Mood: content.
Lets see. Things are going well at work. I completed my training last month & am now considered a full fledged employee. We're having a huge holiday party with open bar & food on Friday. I'm pretty excited. My mom gets into the city around 9:30 that evening and we're spending the weekend shopping and doing other fun things around the city. :)

Had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving vacation at home. My parents moved into a new house in Avon which is really nice. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the area compared to Carmel where they have been for the past 10+ years. For the first time in my entire life, we went shopping on Black Friday. Omg. I wish we would have gone sooner (unless the sales were just better than ever this year due to the recession?). My mom and I got virtually ALL the Christmas shopping done. I picked up a bunch of new clothes, some as much as 75-80% off. It was crazy.

The weather up here in Chicago is starting to seem more like winter (finally). It had been so mild the past few months. It didn't even feel like fall. I think in October we were still having some days with upper 60 degree weather! We got our first snow yesterday though it didn't really stick. It's snowing quite a bit now and the overnight low tonight is supposed to be around 4 degrees. Yikes. Good thing I bought a warmer coat last winter and just ordered some new boots today.

This past weekend was tons of fun. On Saturday, I got to meet Peter Hook of Joy Division / New Order! He was doing a dj set at SmartBar coupled with a signing of his new book, Hacienda: How Not to Run a Club. I can't wait to start reading it. And he told me I have a cool name! Then on Sunday I went to Star Wars in Concert. I'm a total nerdy sucker for anything Star Wars so I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was hosted by Anthony Daniels who played C-3P0. It was so much fun! The orchestra was amazing. If it comes to your city, I highly recommend it.

Mood: happy.
I almost never check lj anymore and I'm sorry about that guys. I don't know if anyone even still reads this, though...

The main way to keep up with me these days is twitter or facebook.

Anyway, just a quick update to let you know how life has been goin for me. I started a new job as an internet support specialist at Cars.com on Sept 21st. Things are going really well there and I'm enjoying it. Interesting work, very generous & fun company to work for and the best part is my boss was one of my friends before I started working there. The turnover rate there is really low so I predict this will be a longterm job for me and I'm thankful that I finally found something like that with all the benefits and whatnot. We get discounts on so many things in addition to the standard health insurance, retirement, etc. Just got my 15% AT&T discount setup on my cell and I'm gonna go this weekend to Formula One Fitness to get a gym membership for this winter.

Other than that, just havin a lot of fun times, constantly networking and meeting new people and just genuinely enjoying life. I can't remember a time when I was happier in the past few years. I love Chicago, my kitties, my wonderful friends & family, my awesome new roommate and all the wonderful things I've had the opportunity to experience since I moved up last fall.

Thinkin about planning a Vegas trip before the end of the year which is exciting!!

Anyway, it's time for bed so I'll wrap this up. The best way to follow my going ons is twitter.. twitter.com/shandelle

Goodnight!

I know I hardly ever update anymore, but I just wanted to share pictures of my newish kittens with you guys. I adopted them about three weeks ago when they were 10 weeks. I think these pics vary between 10 and 12 weeks. Apologies, they were taken with my phone so they aren't the best quality.

This is Evie (named after Evie from V for Vendetta):

This is her brother, Tobias (named after Tobias Funke from Arrested Development):

Subject:st patty's day
Time:4:16 pm.
Mood: happy.
Wow so I had a freakin blast this weekend celebrating St Patty's day. Chicago goes all out which I'd experienced before but it's sorta different when you actually live here.

Anyway, my parents came into town on Saturday so I got up and went downtown to meet up with some friends to watch them dye the river. Then after that, spent most of the actual parade, walking around trying to find my parents. Finally found them once it was almost over. Oh well. We went to lunch and drinks, which was nice. Then I went home to hang out at my place for a bit. Shortly later, my friend, Tristan, came by to hang out and play with my roommate's kitty. Then we walked to Goose Island to meet some more friends for dinner & drinks. Fun times.

Yesterday was pretty crazy, though. Bolton had contacted me the night before about doin an event at Reggie's before going to the south side parade (which is wayyy better than the downtown festivities). So we rounded up some people and went there in the morning. For those unaware, Reggie's is a rock club, restaurant and record shop just off the Cermak-China Town stop on the red line. It hasn't been open all that long, couple years maybe, but it's pretty awesome. Anyway, they were doin this thing with $7 unlimited breakfast, cheap drinks, no cover and a free bus ride to the south side (which is fairly tricky to get to if you don't own a car). It ended up being a blast. The bus they had us ride on was a 1973 school bus built for like third graders. When it's full of drunk twenty-somethings you can imagine the fun that will entail. They were somehow operating a bar on the bus, too (is that legal at all??).. I posted a picture of the bus on facebook. It looked like they spray painted it black and then there were ghouls and demons all over it. Total punk rock bus and we loved it. We were only slightly afraid it might break down en route to the parade!

So after a crazy long drunk time at this parade, we hopped on some Metra train back into downtown. Never did pay any train fare. Walked back to Bolton's place to hang out for a while. And then some of us left and went to Pilsen.. and by that point everyone was pretty gone. I went to use a bathroom and came back to find my friends had disappeared on me (we also managed to leave someone behind when we got on the Metra, oops) and I don't really know Pilsen very well. I think I've been there once or twice previous to this. My phone was goin dead and no one would answer (idiots!!) so I texted a friend who lives there and he helped me figure out how to get on some form of public transit back in the direction of my apt. I was quite thankful for that. Later my parents drunkenly stopped by to drop off some grocery items for me. It was pretty funny. Their friends were chasing our cat around the apt.

Man all in all a crazy fun time was had. I'm so glad I live in Chicago!

Time:7:35 pm.
Mood: cold.
I'm happy to report I finally got a job. I will be working for Oracle downtown doing admin/marketing asst work. It's the most well-paying job I've ever landed. I'm pretty excited. The only thing that sucks is I have to wear a suit every day and I only have three right now, so I'll have to go buy some new clothes.

It will be nice to be off unemployment again. I was really starting to get worried about bills and such.

In other news, I had a missed call from Phil on Friday night. I have no clue why but I chose to do nothing about it.

It is absolutely freezing outside today. -9 and who knows what it is with the windchill. I didn't want to leave the apt at all today but I had a bunch of errands. Brrr. And since I start my job next week, I better get used to it.

Anyway, I'm headed home to watch Kitchen Nightmares. They're featuring a restaurant tonight from Chicago.

Mood: cold.
Life has been full of ups and downs recently.. Right before I left for England, I was laid off from my job. I worked a short temporary position last week but now I'm back on the unemployment until after the 1st of the year most likely. Very sad.

Other than that, things have been pretty well. Going home to Indy tomorrow night and I'll be there through Sunday. I haven't seen my parents but two or three times since I moved, so that should be nice.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Btw, if you're in or near the Chicago area, my roommate and I are tentatively hosting a New Year's Eve party. It'll either be at our place or a block over at Andy's place on LaSalle. We are leaning toward his place just because it's a little bigger and it's a condo on the 24th floor with an awesome view.

Subject:London Day 6,7
Time:4:35 pm.
Day 6:

Got up early and took a coach tour to Stonehenge and Bath (about 2.5 hours East of London I believe). The countryside we passed through on the way to Stonehenge was awesome. We got to see a number of tiny villages that were so completely different from where we were staying, even while in Crawley. The location of Stonehenge is kind of amusing because it's remote yet at the intersection of two highways. It's this huge, daunting structure that's thousands of years old and then there's motorway in the background of all your photos taken from a certain direction.

Day 7:

We had to get up quite early in order to take public transit to Victoria Station, get breakfast and then go from there about a half hour south to Gatwick. Our flight wasn't until 11 but everyone kept telling us security would take two or three hours. Even with having to go back through and check my carry-on bag (they wouldn't let me take the snow globe I'd bought for my mom because it contains an unspecified amount of liquid - stupid), security was a total breeze. It took maybe a half hour total, having to go through twice. So we had plenty of time to sit and relax before boarding. Chris' grandma messed up and told Delta we were strict vegans so the plane food kinda sucked. Well, lunch was ok. Some Indian dish of rice and beans and vegetables I think. Although they gave us a snack of ice cream a few hours later which was not vegan. Then about an hour before arriving, they served everyone else on board a mini cheese pizza but gave us some bullshit soggy sandwich with wilty lettuce and tomato. Oh well.

All in all, I had a great trip. It was definitely stressful at times because we had to squeeze things in and deal with missing some stuff, but I got to see and do most of what I wanted. Being overseas again made me realize how much more I need to travel. I met a lot of interesting people in the hostel who spend tons of time abroad and I'd really like to do that.

Time:4:00 pm.
Okay, updating about the second leg of the trip.

Day 4:

We got up and saw Chris' family off then headed to the local grocery chain called Tesco to stock up on some food to cook in our hostel. I was super impressed with their selection of vegetarian products. We took the train into London and had a traditional English breakfast at The Shakespeare, right outside Victoria Station. Mmm. Although baked beans for breakfast was a little strange. The Tube was particularly messed up that day, like every line we needed had suspensions and "severe delays" (which we later found out only meant one train every ten to fifteen min which wasn't TOO bad) and we ended up having to take a taxi. Evidently the website where we booked the hostel lied about check-in time. We thought it was 11, but were informed it wasn't until 2pm. Fortunately they allowed us to drop off our suitcases in a locked side room and put our food away early.

Day 5:

Got up early and took an express train to Cambridge. We almost missed our train by literally thirty seconds. It was quite a rush. It was cold and misting rain that morning which kinda sucked. We popped into a little cafe and had some yummy tea. Then we took a punt tour on the river. We wanted to do a self-guided punt but the guy said the current was too strong that day. It was still pretty nice and the campus buildings and bridges are lovely. Following the tour, we walked around a bit trying to figure out how to get back to the train station. It's such a beautiful little town and I wished we'd had more time to explore it.

Subject:London Day 1,2,3
Time:2:41 pm.
Finally finding the time to update about my England vacation.

Day 1:

We flew into Gatwick around 8 am. We were met by Chris' uncle, Jeff, (who lives about 45 min south of London in the countryside of Crawley/Sussex/Balcombe Village). After renting some cars for his family, we spent the rest of the day exploring the countryside. His uncle took us to visit Hever Castle in West Kent, which was the childhood home of Ann Boleyn aka the second wife of King Henry VIII. It was a really nice castle but it was misting rain most of the day which made it not quite as lovely and we had to skip walking through the gardens and the hedge maze. But it was my first time touring a real castle so that was pretty neat. After the castle, Jeff drove us to see a pair of famous windmills in the countryside known as Jack and Jill. Again, the misting rain and fog prohibited us from taking in the beautiful view of the hills and countryside that are near the windmills but it was still nice to see them.

Day 2:

Jeff met us at the hotel and we took an express train to London for our first day of sightseeing. We began the day by going on the London Eye. Despite the cloudy weather, we managed to take in some great views of the city and things along the river. Following the Eye, we went on a boat ride down the River Thames which deposited us at Tower Bridge. We then toured the Tower of London and had a quick lunch before taking a taxi through Trafalgar Square and getting out at Buckingham Palace. Happened to be there right on time for the changing of the guard. Chris' family seemed afraid to be in London after dark so we took a train back to the countryside not long after. We went to the mall down the street from the hotel to browse. I found nothing useful about this mall whatsoever but Chris' mom was obsessed with going. After leaving the mall and briefly returning to the hotel to clean up, everyone wanted to do dinner at the restaurant located in the parking lot. Some place called Harvest. It had an irritatingly long wait which seemed not worth it to me, but they refused to go anywhere else. I ended up having a fairly decent meal, though, of pumpkin soup (re: butternut squash) and a sweet potato and aubergine (eggplant) curry with spiced apple chutney.

Day 3:

We arose early and were driven to Jeff's church in the countryside for the christening of their new baby, Hope. St Mary's church in Balcombe Village, which is part of the Church of England. The church is about 600 years old I was told and had very nice architecture. There was also a small cemetary in the back with some graves nearly 300 years old or so. Quite interesting. The service was roughly an hour long and just seemed like a Catholic service to me. Due to it being the first Sunday of Advent, they did the baptism separate from the church service.

Time:2:14 pm.
So. Halloween was alright. I took the train to Lafayette. I had a really cute costume. I was a snuggly lion. Although I wish there wouldn't have been so much drama involving a certain person. But whatev.

I look back on the past couple months since moving to Chicago and realized how nice my life has been in general. I love this city.

Naturally, I was glad that Obama was elected. Chicago was completely on fire that night. I ended up having some beers and then heading to Grant Park with some friends for the festivities and speech. Let me tell you, it was absolutely crazy. But totally worth it. It really brought everyone together and I felt his speech was very inspirational. I know the man isn't a god like some people seem to think, but I really believe he will change our country for the better.

Lets see. I saw Marnie Stern and Gang Gang Dance on Monday. Very good show.
Although I discovered Empty Bottle was trying to house a cat which pissed me off. I reported them to the humane society because that's just messed up. He was boney and malnurished, too. Bleh. Not to mention that's probably an animal cruelty issue as well as a health violation since they serve food and beverages.

Anyway. Just waiting for Jenny and Aaron and whoever to arrive. Have a nice weekend.

Anyone been to London that has any recommendations of fun things to do, nice places to eat that aren't a small fortune, or any other tips? I will be there for a week at Thanksgiving.

Last night I went to the Asobi Seksu show. It was so so good. They are adorable.

I'm so glad I live in a place that doesn't suck and provides me the opportunity to experience something new every day. And where there's always something fun going on.

Tomorrow I'm taking the train to Purdue after work. It's Homecoming but really I'm just going to visit friends. I'm going down Halloween weekend also so I can vote early and whatnot.

A vegetarian restaurant I really enjoyed (Earwax) and had only recently discovered was evidently closed for a rat infestation yesterday. Very sad.

Subject:cat
Time:4:37 pm.
After much consideration, I decided to get rid of my cat. He was getting along okay with Kelly's cat but he refused to share a litter box with him. I know it wasn't a health problem because he did the same thing with my mom's cats. He started pooping on the floor in defiance. Then when he lived alone again, he did not do it. But it started back up a few weeks ago. We tried everything we could but even with multiple boxes and scooping them regularly, we couldn't appease him.

So he's going to go live with my friend, James, in Indianapolis. And I'm going to adopt a new kitty or two.

I found a perfect 11-month old calico at the Anti-Cruelty Society a couple days ago but ran into problems with my application because they couldn't verify vaccination records for Kelly's cat. That's so lame considering she bought him from the same place! Sigh. Well they denied my app which was really surprising so I tried a couple other places yesterday but they were either too expensive or closed. And a few were really far away or I had no idea how to get there. Instead, I looked on Craigslist and there are tons and tons of free kittens listed.

I've been talkin to a girl who lives in Beverly who has several females at varying ages. She's supposed to send me some pics and if all goes well, she said she'd drive them up sometime this week. And they've all been spayed already, which is helpful. She's only asking for $20 per cat to offset medical expenses, which is reasonable.

I already picked out Evie as the name for my new little one. I got the idea after recently re-watching V for Vendetta, but I've always thought it was pretty in general.

The good and bad lately..

Good:
-Saw some really great shows (High Places, MY BLOODY VALENTINE!!, and Hot Chip).
-I like my job much more now and I'll be able to save up quite a bit of money.
-I got about twelve new games to play on the DS on Sunday and tons of new musics.
-I've been sticking to my reading goal and have already completed two books since living here
-I'm visiting London for a week at Thanksgiving. Exciting!
-I LOVE where I live and enjoy my new life immensely. Even made a few new friends so far.
-The kitties not only get along but actually like each other.

Bad:
-My apt is still dirty and roommate doesn't help with that very much.
-It is getting cold, cold COLD outside!
-I miss Emma and wish her owner and I could finally work shit out. Especially after this morning.

At least the good far outweighs the bad.

I miss my friends back in Indiana. I will be visiting Lafayette the weekend of October 11th, though.
